In 1964, the communist government issued a decision to liquidate the city above the coal deposits, which began in 1967 and ended in the eighties. The surroundings of the city devastated by surface coal mining were gradually reclaimed. The government also decided to build a new Most on the right bank of the Bílina river.

 

But Most is not a city that has lost its soul. It is a city that has a story worth being discovered. It is a city that has preserved some of its historical monuments, such as the Gothic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which was moved 841 meters on rails to save it from destruction. The Gothic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary built in 1517-1550 gained worldwide fame in 1975, when it was moved by rails by 841 meters to be saved from the city, which was leveled to the ground due to coal mining. It is recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the transport of the heaviest object by rail.

 

It is also a city that has created new attractions, such as the extensive recreational  water areas that were formed by flooding the depleted quarries. These lakes are suitable for sports and recreation, such as swimming, fishing, boating, windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, and diving. The largest of them, the Most Lake, is the second largest artificial lake in the country. It was created on the northern edge of the city with a length of 2.5 km and a width of 1.5 km creating an area of 309 hectares (765 acres).

 

Most is a city that offers outstanding sports facilities, such as the Autodrom Most, a motor racing circuit that hosts various national and international events, and the Hippodrome Most, a horse racing track that is one of the oldest and largest in Europe. 

 

Most is a city that invites you to explore its mining tradition, both past and present. You can visit the inactive mines that serve as museums, such as the Coal Mine Museum and the Mining Museum, where you can learn about the history, technology, and life of the miners. You can also join the “Coal Safari”, a guided tour that takes you to the active surface mines, where you can see the sophisticated equipment and the impressive landscape that is constantly changing2
